Last week Simon and I began a family-inclusive homegroup. God worked on us since the first week in January about this and since then have given us some wonderful resources. Yes, we wanted to include children for the simple fact that hiring a babysitter is expensive every week, but it is really about more than that. Our hearts are that it is a time when families can come together and worship as a family and as we know all too well, families today don't spend much time together at all, much less worshipping God.
Anyway, for Father's Day, I sought and sought for some fun activity to do to honor the dads (wasted way too much time on the Internet) and gently God said, "Hey, ask me." (You mean God has answers the internet doesn't??? :) - I say this because if one thing is my idol, it's this- being on the computer.
God as always came through and spoke that He wants fathers to have wisdom for their families but many Dads just don't know how to seek out wisdom.
Finding Proverbs 2:1-5 gave me the answer:
1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
So that was it, I decided to send the Dads on a hunt for wisdom with their families. I strung up a maze with yarn and had different stations set up for families to discover clues to find wisdom following the steps to wisdom found in Proverbs 2:1-5.
The first station was asking the families where we find God's words and his commands. Once they answered "The Bible" they then continued to Clue #2. It continued like this:
What 2 body parts can we use to find wisdom?
Answer: Our ears and our hearts (Proverbs 2:2)
Clue #3-
Our question is:
We don’t use a telephone to call or cry out to God, but we can talk to him. How do we talk to God? Answer: Pray (Proverbs 2:3)
Clue #4
Our last question is:
Is hidden treasure something we have to search for or is it something that comes to us by sitting around?Answer: We have to look for hidden treasure, just like we have to seek out God’s wisdom. (Proverbs 2:4)
At the end of the hunt I posted this note on the "treasure chest". Each child had prepared a sign that said "Wisdom" for their dads and the dads got to unwrap it.
Read to your family:
Now that we’re at the end of the hunt, name the things we have learned we need to find God’s Wisdom-
1. The Bible
2. Ears and a heart to hear God
3. We need to pray to God
4. We need to seek Him out like He is treasure
Dads- Open the “treasure chest” and find your box from your family. You may open the box your family prepared for you.
Congratulations! You’ve found wisdom!!!
Dads- Using your Bible, read Proverbs 2: 1-5 to your family and pray for wisdom to lead your family.
The goal of the hunt was to let those dads & (as a reminder to the moms as well) that God does provide wisdom, but we do have a role in the gift of wisdom. We must seek that gift and sometimes the hardest of all, follow it... :)
