Okay, thoughts are swirling in my head as to how to approach this, but would you join me in reading a portion of my alma mater's statement of purpose in 1980 vs. its "newly revised" version of 2003?
The 1980 version is watered down quite a bit already, but I don't even know what to say about the 2003 version.
More thoughts on this later for sure...
From the College's Statement of Purpose
adopted 1980-
In an atmosphere of freedom and sensitivity, the College bears witness to God's revelation in Jesus Christ who challenges all human beings to search for truth, to work for justice, to develop wisdom, and to become loving persons. Continuing in this vital faith, the College believes that it must listen attentively and humbly to all human voices so that it may hear the call of God no matter how God may speak.
From the College’s Statement of Purpose
adopted 2003 -
the College believes that it must listen attentively and humbly to all human voices so that it may hear the call of God no matter how God may speak. A genuine church-related liberal arts college must ensure that both diversity and Christian identity are present on campus in a creative balance. The goal of a Maryville education is not simply the adoption of a particular stance or worldview, but rather the search for truth, wherever it may be found, and the ability to recognize and take seriously life’s basic questions of faith, meaning and value.

They imply that the adoption of a single stance or worldview is simpleminded. They also imply that God's Word is not the ultimate authority or way to view the world. Christianity IS based on a very singular worldview and that view is totally based on the Word. They must not be a Christian college anymore. There, I said it for you.
There are so many aspects to this I want to address. Where oh where to start???
