Oh - My Highness!

Time for a little potty talk.

The other day I heard my three year old 'H' fall down on her backside and exclaim, "Oh, my Highness!" I thought it was a strange thing to say but didn't think much about it but since then she'll say things like, "Mom, come wipe my highness."

I guess I don't mind a few pet names for body parts, but it's just that this one is a cross between 'hiney' and 'a**'. Know what I'm saying?

Of course this all opens up a can of worms since also lately my 5 year old son has been more and more aware of how different girls and boys are made. I have sworn all along that I will not make a big deal out of the topic and to be honest and truthful, but I still cannot help cringe if Jackson says the word 'penis' in public.

So, I've been on the hunt for some age appropriate books that teaches them God's design for our bodies. Truthful, honest, not too graphic, but real. I found these 2 at the Christian bookstore over the weekend and we'll be reading them this week. I'll have to let you know how it goes... :)

The Story of Me- God's Design for Sex by Stan and Brenna Jones (Book 1)
Before I Was Born - God's Design for Sex by Carolyn Nystrom (Book 2)

Book 1 is for ages 3-5 and Book 2 is for ages 5-8.

My only critique of the first one is they show the mother having a c-section and say it was 'scary' - which has not at all what I've experienced in my births- but it will give me the perfect opportunity to educate the kids about c-sections.

Great topic!!! We all have those cringe moments. You want to educat your kids on these topic before they get it from somewhere else, but you never know when it's going to come back up. We went through this with my son when he was about 2 1/2. He wanted to kow why the cat didn't have a "peepee" and where her pee came out. I wasn't expecting such a topic at such a young age, but we did our best. There's an old book out there that my mom got for me as a kid that I still have somewhere. I think it's called "How Babies are Made." I don't recall it being too graphic. Maybe I'll dig it out and see...

Maybe it's hiney and anus? Just a thought to make it not so bad...

Ok, so parents in the blogosphere...penis, vagina, anus, whatever you want to call them are all part of CREATION. Sex is a gift from God, not something to be hidden and covered up. Childhood is as much a period of sexual growth as any, and in fact, the more we talk about it, the less awkward it will be when they are teenagers (and the more likely they'll come to you when they confront a sexual problem).

If you walk on eggshells about sex, your child will pick up on it and will think that it's something taboo.

In order to take sexuality back from the media, as Christians like to talk about doing, we have to reclaim the wonderful gift God has given us.
